Dear Self: A Collection of Poems and Art by Kendra Kantor
Enter the mind of artist and mother, Kendra, who lives with mental illnesses in this illustrated series, “Dear Self.” Written over a number of years, these works served as personal reminders, notes, daily observations as well as affirmations. The words and images in this collection of 30 poems and art, show the journey of growth, courage, self discovery and honesty.
This collection of 30 poems and illustrations is a culmination of years of work and I am proud to be sharing it now. In November of 2013, I began work in a journal, creating poems, notes and words of wisdom written to myself. For the first time in years, or probably ever, I was making art and writing just for myself. I was creating with no intention of sharing my work everyday. I wasn’t creating for the praise of anyone but myself. It felt good and I was filled with freedom.
Once I decided to create a book out of my work, I went back through my older journals and realized that I had been doing these “Dear Self” type poems and notes for years without knowing it. It’s kind of funny how that works sometimes, isn’t it?

“Dear Self is a beautiful illustration of what so many of us are thinking, feeling and believing. Kendra’s words and imagery whisk you away into her world, one that I can definitely relate to, but I could never explain with quite the same spirit that Kendra weaves into her art. This book is a journey of sacred, scary and intimate moments to validate and welcome all of us, no matter what we’re going through.”

“Painful, poignant, and beautifully crafted – Kendra Kantor cracks her heart open and spreads her hurts, reminiscing, and self encouragement on the pages of her sketchbooks and lets you into her world of depression and inner conflict. I can relate to the sharings of her words, and it makes me feel less alone in my own struggles. Thank you for bearing it all, Kendra!”

Hi, I’m Kendra Kantor! I’m a Creativity and Acceptance Mentor and I help women break away from negative self talk so they can consciously make the right decisions for them even on emotionally hard days. “Dear Self” is my first publication and it perfectly combines my loves of visual art and the written word.
My goal is to help you shift your life from merely surviving to thriving each and every day. I want you to be able to tackle your negative self talk, to be able to consciously make the right choices for YOU even when it’s hard and even on bad days.
As an ARTbundance™ Coach, trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and my own personal mission to help many women as possible one person at a time…I’m here to help you figure out what you want, what you need and what’s lacking in your life to move beyond the mundane and climb out of your comfort fort and into really living.
I’m a stay at home mom to my 5 year old and splits my days between running my business and playing with my rambunctious kiddo. My family of 3 currently lives in Virginia but dreams of life on the road.
When I’m not helping you improve your mental health, you can find me indulging in her guilty pleasure reads (romances or zombie novels), stealing as many cuddles as possible from my son and bribing my husband to go get ice cream (it’s really not that hard!).
